Equipment

  • Large saucepan.
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Wooden spoon
  • Glass Jar

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 1 small Spanish onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Sauté the Aromatics

  • Start by heating your oil in the large saucepan. Add the chopped onions to the warm oil. Cook them until they look soft and clear. Add the garlic after the onions are ready. Stir them for only one minute so they smell good.

Mix the Base

  • Add the ketchup and water to the saucepan. Stir them until they are very well combined. The sauce will look very bright red now. Keep the heat on a medium setting for this.

Add the Sweetness

  • Pour in the brown sugar and the dark molasses. These ingredients make the sauce very thick and rich. Use your whisk to break up any sugar lumps. The sauce should look very dark and glossy now.

Season the Sauce

  • Add the vinegar, mustard, and all the dry spices. Stir everything together until the color is very even. Make sure the chili powder is mixed in well. Smelling the sauce now is a very great experience.

Simmer and Thicken

  • Turn the heat down to a low setting. Let the sauce bubble very gently for ten minutes. This helps the flavors become very strong and deep. Stir it occasionally so nothing sticks to the bottom.

Cool and Use

  • Take the pan off the heat when it is thick. Let the sauce cool down for a few minutes. It will get even thicker as it cools. Now you can brush it on your favorite meat.

Notes
