Equipment

  • Oven
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking Dish
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Kitchen Scales
  • Small saucepan
  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • 800 g Plums
  • 100 g Caster Sugar
  • 1 tsp Orange Zest
  • 200 g Plain Flour
  • 100 g Butter
  • 75 g Demerara Sugar
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon

Instructions

1. Prepare the Plum Filling

  • Wash the plums and remove the hard stones. Cut them into thick, even wedges. Place them into your sturdy baking dish. Sprinkle a little sugar over the fruit pieces. Add the orange zest for a fresh scent.

2. Make the Crumble Topping

  • Put the flour into a large mixing bowl. Add the cold butter cubes to the flour. Rub them together using your clean fingertips. The mixture should look like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the crunchy demerara sugar now.

3. Cover the Fruit Layer

  • Pour the crumble mixture over the sliced plums. Spread it out to cover all the fruit. Do not press the topping down too hard. Keep it light so it stays very crunchy.

4. Bake Until Golden Brown

  • Place the dish into a preheated hot oven. Bake it for about thirty to forty minutes. The fruit should be bubbling at the edges. The top should be a beautiful golden color.

Notes

  • ➔ Use cold butter for a much crunchier topping.
  • ➔ Do not over-mix the butter and the flour.
  • ➔ Slice the plums into equal sizes for even cooking.
  • ➔ Add nuts to the topping for extra nutty flavor.
  • ➔ Let the crumble sit for five minutes before serving.
  • ➔ Use ripe plums for the best natural fruit sweetness.
  • ➔ Sprinkle extra cinnamon on top for a better aroma.
