Equipment

  • Large cooking pot.
  • Heat Proof Pitcher
  • Long Wooden Spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Small bowl

Ingredients

  • 3 Family-size black tea bags
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 8 cups Filtered water
  • Ice for serving

Instructions

Boil the Water

  • Start by pouring four cups of water into your pot. Turn the heat to high on your stove. Wait for the water to reach a rolling boil.

Add the Secret Ingredient

  • Once the water boils, turn off the heat. Add a tiny pinch of baking soda now. This keeps the tea from getting cloudy.

Steep the Tea Bags

  • Place your black tea bags into the hot water. Let them sit for about five minutes. Do not leave them too long. Long steeping makes tea bitter.

Remove the Tea Bags

  • Take the tea bags out of the pot. Do not squeeze the bags. Squeezing releases bitter tannins into your drink. Just lift them out.

Mix in the Sugar

  • Pour the white sugar into the hot tea. Stir it well with your wooden spoon. The heat helps the sugar dissolve completely.

Add Cold Water

  • Pour the tea mixture into your large pitcher. Add the remaining cold water to the pitcher. This brings the tea to full volume.

Chill the Tea

  • Place the pitcher in the refrigerator. Let it get very cold. This usually takes two or three hours. Cold tea tastes much better.

Serve Over Ice

  • Fill a tall glass with fresh ice. Pour the sweet tea over the ice. Enjoy your homemade McDonald's style treat.
